    Mill Creek Blends

 Garden Friendly:

In the spring most people who feed the birds will realize the misery of cleaning the mess from around their feeders as a result of several months worth of shell build up. In the spring this debris gets quite smelly and ugly. Garden Friendly contains only food so there is no waste or debris on the ground and anything that does drop to the ground gets eaten. . Additionally there will be a garden pay off later in the spring since this blend will not germinate; thus no weeds ! All other mixes tend to sprout several different plants that many gardeners prefer not to see (nor weed).

 Seasons Woodland:

After several years of research we have discovered that birds tend to live in either wooded areas or open meadows. As well, since birds migrate, breed, contend with different weather conditions and feed their young during different times of the year, their needs vary depending on the season. To accommodate these differences we have formulated two different “Seasonally Adjusted” blends to fit the needs of different birds’ needs during different times of the year.
Seasonally Adjusted Woodland has these features. Each season, we combine 32 different ingredients to provide the birds with the best possible nutrition available. The spring formulation is high in protein for muscle development and stamina (migration, breeding & food collection for their young). It contains fruit for migratory fruit eating birds. It contains oyster shell to help digestion and add needed calcium for egg production. Micronised ingredients are added to convert the sugars and make these  ingredients digestible. The winter blend is high in carbohydrates to keep birds warm. Summer blend accommodate birds that stay for the summer.
Each season these mixes are changed to accommodate the birds and their environment. The only thing you need to know is whether you live in a wooded area or an open meadow. We will take care of the rest.

  Seasons Urban Bird

This formula is specifically blended for birds in urban residential areas. We have considered established neighbourhoods and new developments when we were doing research to create Seasons Urban Bird. As the name states, it is seasonally adjusted. Each of the four seasons, we change the formula of over 30 different ingredients to accommodate the needs of birds at different times of the year. Additionally, we have accounted for the fact that birds migrate so each season the formula accommodates the birds that should be in Ontario urban areas at that particular time of year.
Seasons Urban Bird is the most nutritionally perfect formula made for city birds in the world. This means that your birds will have higher protein in the spring and summer for muscle growth in young birds. In the colder months, we provide higher carbohydrates so birds can generate warmth. Calcium is added during egg production seasons and grit is added during months where grit is difficult or dangerous to find.

  Squirrel Free Blend

Squirrel Free is an all natural mix of bird seed that is attractive to birds and squirrels do not like it. We have had reports that grackles are also not attracted to this blend.  There are no harsh pepper or chemicals added to ensure your safety and the safety of our animal friends. We believe that squirrels can be controlled without using harmful tactics It is both simple and effective. This is an all natural blend of the ingredients that are not attractive to squirrels. You will attract many birds that enjoy feeding from a tubular feeder or a platform fly through feeder. Ground feeding birds are also attracted to this blend. There are ingredients in this blend that attract cardinals, goldfinches, purple finches, sparrows, mourning doves, indigo buntings, pine siskins, and many more birds. Remember, the type of feeder you use will also determine which birds will eat this blend. Cardinals, sparrows, doves etc., prefer to feed on a platform low to the ground. We always ensure the finest and most attractive ingredients in our blends. All our seeds have the highest food to shell ratio available.

Town & Country Blend

Town and Country is a highly attractive blend of seeds. Because of the nature of the seed, it is not attractive to Starlings. It is also one of the cleanest blends on the market. You will notice a large quantity of both black oil and grey striped sunflowers. These are the two most attractive ingredients to eastern birds. This blend is suitable for most styles of bird feeders. Because it is low in dust and is a “dry” blend, it flows well through hopper style and tubular feeders. It is also attractive to birds who feed on platform or fly through feeders Ground feeding birds are also attracted to this formula. . We always ensure the finest and most attractive ingredients in our blends. All our seeds have the highest food to shell ratio available.

  Wild Finch Blend

Wild finch blend is designed specifically for finches. You will notice that we have deliberately avoided including proso millets. These are generally more attractive to ground feeders like mourning doves and house sparrows. Our blend has ingredients that attract finches. Additionally, the size of our ingredients allows free flow through the small portholes in all finch feeders.

 Cardinal Blend

Attract Canada’s favorite bird to your backyard with our cardinal blend. This is a simple mix of black oil sunflower and safflower. Cardinals prefer to eat on a platform feeder and ideally near the ground. Place the feeder near cedar hedges or a close escape route witch will help them feel safe. Cardinals tend to feed in routine patterns so do not let the feeder go empty once they have started to feed at your feeder.

  Triple Delight

The three most attractive ingredients to eastern birds are black oil sunflower, striped sunflower and fresh roasted and unsalted peanuts. This formula will attract over 60 different birds to eastern Canadian feeders. Our sunflower is selected for its freshness, cleanliness and high kernel content. Our peanuts are non-rancid and it is all lovingly blended for your birds.

   Muskoka Blend

Muskoka blend is a practical year round formulation. This is a good blend for all locations and feeder types. Many different Canadian birds will be attracted to this formula. You will see that there is a large amount of black oil sunflower in this mix. Black oil sunflower is the most attractive ingredient. There are no fillers in this blend. (We always consider wheat and milo as fillers)

 Deluxe Blend

This blend contains over 60% black oil sunflower. Black oil sunflower is the most attractive ingredient. The sunflower we use is 99% clean and has no mould. It is the highest kernel content sunflower available. This will ensure repeat visitors to your feeder. Many different birds will be attracted to this blend. Great for all feeders types.

Selecting quality sunflowers

(as used in Mill Creeks blends)

Click to see how each sunflower head has all grades of sunflower seeds. You will see that with any sunflower head you can find seeds with no kernels inside right up to seeds with full kernels. Since every sunflower has all grades of sunflower seeds farmers will separate the grains to from good to poor. Often the poor seeds are sold as "bird food" to discount box stores and discount seed makers. It can be deceiving because the outside of the shell appears normal to the untrained eye. Now you can see the difference using the link above to identify immature seed, blanks and insect damaged seed. The easy way to tell the difference is by a low advertised price. Click the link above and ask yourself which grade of seed do you want in your feeder. Ironically, good seed costs priced only slightly more than poor seed but the food content is significantly greater in good seed. Since the seed often comes from grain brokers, the bags even look the same on the outside but the seed inside is quite different.

Selecting Good Bird Seed

Avoiding Poor Grade Seed

Mill Creek selects the best seed with the highest kernel content for their blends. This ensures that birds will find feeders with Mill Creek seed to be the best source of food for all seasons. Better food brings more birds!
